Tips for Preparing for Cosmetic Fillers

At the Center for Facial Appearances, we have numerous cosmetic filler treatments designed to help with wrinkles, creases and folds on the face. This includes Botox, the most well-known of these treatments, but also several others.

A big part of our job is to make sure these treatments are safe and effective for you, and this is part of the process you can help your cosmetic surgeon with. Here are a few tips for preparing for injection treatments – both before and after the procedure.

Pain

  • Creams: There are multiple creams that can be effective for injection-related pain, both before and after treatment. Creams containing Arnica and vitamin K have been shown to have success.
  • Supplements: Arnica supplements have also had success with items from bruising to pain. Many people begin these pills the day before or the day of treatment, and they can remain part of your regimen until any bruising has subsided.

Swelling and Bruising

  • Within two weeks before treatment, don’t take any aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications (Advil, ibuprofen, etc.), vitamin E or fish supplements. These can increase bruising and bleeding near the injection site.
  • Add leafy greens to the diet – boosts vitamin K.
  • Drink plenty of water, and eat a large meal just before treatment. Many people bring a snack to treatment.
  • If appearance is a social concern for you, don’t schedule any social plans within a week or so after treatments, as bruising may last for around this long in some cases.

After Treatment

There are a few avoidance habits to practice after a dermal filler treatment:

  • Don’t wear swim goggles for at least two weeks
  • Don’t work out on the same day as your treatment
  • Don’t receive any face-down massages or similar treatments for at least two weeks
  • Don’t use strong Retinols on the night after treatment
  • Don’t plan important social events for a week to 10 days
  • Don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen for at least 36 hours, often longer, after treatment
