Blepharospasm

Benign essential blepharospasm is a disorder characterized by involuntary spasm of the eyelids and sometimes other facial muscles such as the nose or the mouth. Most patients with benign essential blepharospasm also have dry, irritated eyes and in most patients, symptoms are worse when exposed to bright light. Symptoms may also get worse when one is tired or anxious. This is a rare condition that many will suffer with for some time prior to being diagnosed and treated.

Benign essential blepharospasm is an uncommon problem. Botox treatments are the initial treatment and for most patients the only treatment they will need throughout life. Many patients also benefit from treating dry eye and tinting their glasses or sunglasses.

Some patients’ symptoms cannot be controlled with Botox alone and for this group of patients Myectomy surgery is indicated. Patients are referred from all over the world for Myectomy surgery. Many patients with blepharospasm also develop droopy eyelids and droopy eyebrows and come to The Center For Facial Appearances for treatment.

Dr. McCann also cares for patient with hemifacial spasm that is a condition somewhat related to benign essential blepharospasm but only involves spasm of one eyelids and one side of the face. This condition is typically managed with injections of Botox.
